Candidates identify stakeholders within and outside the school community who impact the school library program. Candidates develop a plan to advocate for school library and information programs, resources, and services.
SLM 501 Advocacy plan Advocacy has become such a crucial component in the library field where the librarian’s place in the school system has been questioned. I am a firm supporter for initiating and utilizing an advocacy plan to show the worth and value of my potential future position as a librarian. The advocacy plan that I created for the Library Administration and Management course shows the importance of having a librarian who will collaborate with teachers to benefit their teaching practices. Standard 4.4 ask for librarians to “identify stakeholders within the school community who impact the school library program and to develop a plan to advocate for school library and information programs, resources, and services.” With this in mind, I designed a plan where the librarian collaborates with classroom teachers to help their students reach the teachers’ SLO requirements. The objective here is to provide teachers with assistance using the resources available in the library as well as co-teaching and/or collaborative planning to maximize their goals for their students. I designed this advocacy plan with my current school in mind. My administration has been advocating for collaboration amongst departments both within our content areas and outside. Collaboration is great resource for teachers and when it can be effectively implemented it can increase student achievement. For this plan I outlined my agenda to include teacher-librarian collaboration, team planning, team-teaching, technology training, professional resources and subscriptions. By providing these benefits, I can provide teachers with another set of ideas and classroom experience to help develop engaging plans and projects to help students meet their goals. I will also be able to give on-site training of new technologies for teachers, as well as model these new technologies. I feel that this advocacy plan is reasonable and when implemented can prove to be successful for all. This plan focuses more on teachers and improving teaching practices, but if we want to improve student achievement, we must first start with the teachers and how we are teaching. To improve this plan, I would provide more campaign materials to promote my ideas and to encourage all teachers and administration to participate. |
