The beauty of technology and the Internet is that anyone can access anything at any time. The same goes for the library and its resources. In SLM 505 Information Sources I created a tutorial video for the ABC-CLIO database. These instructions are posted on my library resources webpage where they can be accessed from any computer and any mobile device before, during, or after hours because we all know that many teachers’ work is not done at the end of the school day. Creating a tutorial such as this connects to AASL’s Standard 3.3 because it provides “flexible, open access for library services…[I] can demonstrate solutions for addressing physical, social, and intellectual barriers to equitable access to resources and services.” Creating a video appeals to visual and auditory learners and can be used as an accommodation for those students with special needs. While I did not use this specific one during my collaborative lesson plan for SLM 552 Practicum in School Library because my school does not have an account with ABC-CLIO, I did create one for EBSCO. I found that the students responded well to actually seeing how to navigate the database. For the tutorial posted here for this reflection, I had created the tutorial for a potential social studies/English lesson on censorship in America. The tutorial takes students through an example search where I show them how to effectively search for articles and resources pertaining to censorship in America. My intention for this tutorial was to create a guide for students that could be used as a model and could also be accessed outside of school. Including a tutorial or multiple tutorials such as this one could prove to be most useful for both teachers and students. While the video played during my collaborative lesson plan, I was able to circulate the room providing assistance to students who needed it. The tutorial shows students how to effectively search a database, discussing specific keywords and terms to narrow down their results for their intended assignment. By posting this on my library website, the tutorial is there for anyone to use at any point. At the same time, the library has now become a mobile site for users. I think having access like this is essential especially when many media centers are being used and closed during testing windows. In the future I would like to try to create more tutorials such as this one and share it with classroom teachers and students. |
