SLM 505 Library Resources Webpage Communicating to our students, parents, and community members is how we can keep every stakeholder involved and engaged in our students’ learning development. Keeping the lines of communication open and making our school systems transparent is how we can ensure that we are doing everything we can to produce lifelong learners. AASL Standard 3.1 directs librarians to “provide support, model multiple strategies for students, other teachers, and administrators…to locate, evaluate, and ethically use information…collaborate with students, teachers, and administration to efficiently access, interpret and communicate information.” During the SLM 505 Information Sources course I created a Library Resources Webpage where students, teachers, administration, and parents could access helpful resources and information pertaining to research, copyright information, and strategies for navigating databases. This webpage included helpful websites for elementary, middle, high school, and all age groups. These websites included sites like NASA, the National Art Gallery for Kids, and various websites for teachers to access specific information for their curriculums. Besides providing online resources, I also included citation information geared to help students understand how to properly cite their essays without plagiarizing. This webpage is also where I included information about the school library and our local library, database tutorials, links just for parents, and the policies associated with our school system as well as the AASL guidelines. Among the technical information, I also created two pathfinders for possible lessons or projects that could be seen in a high school English or Social Studies curriculum and an elementary lesson for a science class focused on astronomy. Each of the pathfinders takes students through multiple resources to locate information pertaining to each of the subjects. Essentially, I think the best part of this webpage is the ease of access and the variety of resources made available for all, including teachers. With a webpage such as this, I have created a one-stop location for anyone who maybe in need of a resource for a project or who wants ethical information regarding the use of the library. If I were to use this webpage within my school district, I think I would include more resources for all subjects especially if it was for one specific school. By including more content area specific sources, I would be able to reach all students and teachers. Overall, I am very proud of this webpage, more specifically the pathfinders I created. I feel as though the pathfinder assignments could be an assignment that teachers could use and collaborate with me to integrate into their units. These types of assignments also showcase what resources and strategies I could offer them. In the future I would like to expand on these types of assignments, spreading out to other content areas to make myself more available to everyone. I can see myself using these in my own library someday and with each year adding to them to make them more useful. |
